Why I refused his money-

January 23, 2025 by Charity Pagano

I used to think being financially supported by a man was just the way motherhood was. Hell, my dad went to work and took care of our family while my mom stayed home with us. Boy, was I wrong.

As an adult, I now realize that the Avon, Tupperware, and babysitting my mom did was her way of adding to the household income- DUH.

Tons of women find themselves trapped in situations they don’t want to be in because they are financially unable to leave.

I didn’t leave my first marriage until my son was old enough to start school. Because even though I should have left long before that, I wanted to be home with my son more. As a stay at home mom, leaving my marriage wasn’t an option until I had means to support myself. But when he was old enough to start school full time, it gave me permission to leave because I was finally earning a paycheck.

Here’s the weird part though-

When I got pregnant with my youngest son years later, the thought of staying home made me want to vomit. (And it wasn’t just the morning sickness.)

Mike was fully willing to support me and the boys so I could stay home with the baby, BUT- the idea of someone else controlling my financial future gave me straight-up anxiety. My chest would literally tighten every time I thought about it.

That’s why I started my blog and my online business. I needed my own thing. My own money. My own power.

Look, I get it. Some women are cool letting their man handle the money. And that’s totally fine if it works for them. But for the rest of us? The ones grinding away at building our own businesses? We’re cut from a different cloth.
